“Mr. Four Letter” is the brainchild of Thornton Howard III. He developed this system to capture those who need a non-traditional method to help them grasp necessary learning concepts. His “four letter” concept has been effective in the schools and programs where it has been implemented. As a result of analyzing data and assessments of students’ progression over the past fourteen years, Mr. Howard identified two distinct learning gaps that he felt needed closing. His first observation was that technological advancement has caused many youth to lose the ability to verbally communicate. By implementing his “four letter” technique of instruction, he has been effective in opening the door for meaningful conversations with students. His method helps the youth connect and communicate thus enhancing their social, emotional, academic and learning abilities.

Secondly, he observed that many students were in need of an effective system to solve their mathematical problems. They needed a way to improve their memory, attention and problem solving skills in order to accomplish their mathematical objectives. His “four letter” technique has been tried and proven and as former Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, James Pughsley said his system works because it is both “logical and progressive”. By using his guidebook “Going Fourword: Using FOUR Letter Words in a Positive Way”, parents and administrators are able to use this system both at home and in the classroom as reinforcement for both math and reading concepts.

Mr. Howard‘s, “Going Fourword” program is a perfect mentoring tool for parents, counselors, after school coordinators, church youth group leaders or any youth programming component seeking to facilitate positive communication and constructive connections with youth. As former Assistant Superintendent of Middle School Curriculum and Instruction for Charlotte Mecklenburg School District, D. Ronald S. Dixon, said it is perfect for “counselors in small group and/or individual counseling sessions”. Results that have been seen within the first weeks of implementation are increases in self-esteem, goal achievement, peer-power and the desire to help others.
